What would music look like if you could see it?

- Watercolor paintings by Jordan Mozer -

Chicago, June 4th 2003 -- The first exhibition of United States designer Jordan Mozer will be presented in the Carl Hammer Gallery in Chicago from 6th June until 12th July 2003.

The idea for the paintings date back to the late 70’s and emerged from different concurrent influences.

Originally Jordan Mozer intended to become an artist and at first studied painting and sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago. He then went on to get degrees in Architecture and Industrial Design.

Music was of great meaning to Mozer – as a steady companion while drawing and also as a great abstract structure. Though being able to read music, he never mastered an instrument. He began studying the structure of western music under the guidance of a composer friend.

Referring to Goethe’s quote „architecture is like frozen music“ Mozer started to draw analogies: „Music and architecture share some important qualities. Both have layers of structure and sub-structure. One experiences both over time, but they can be remembered as a simple whole. Curiously, both – music and architecture - have profound emotional content in spite of their ability to be entirely abstract.“

Many of the same methods used to compose the paintings are used by Jordan Mozer in the design of architecture and furniture.

44-year-old Jordan Mozer designer is renowned for his exceptional Bar- and Restaurant projects for MGM Mirage (Las Vegas, Biloxi), Volkswagen, stage concepts for the Rolling Stones as well as for reshaping department stores like Karstadt / Mülheim (Germany) or the Queen’s jeweler Asprey & Garrard (UK). Since 1986 Jordan Mozer is president of Jordan Mozer & Associates.
